My Philosophy on teaching is a combination of things, really. First, I believe that education is at least as much about learning social, emotional, and relationship skills as it is about memorizing facts or perfecting grammar.
I want my students to leave any course that they complete with me with better abilities to relate to and empathize with their classmates. Additionally, I aim to help students contextualize and place themselves within the great issues of our time.
Perhaps it sounds funny, but I believe that teaching is inherently political and we will not be ignoring the problems that contemporary American society faces. The climate crisis, racism/police brutality, immigration and other issues will be discussed and explored through literature. I believe that literature is as important a tool as any if we are going to change society for the better; with great books you can inhabit the mind and body of another, interact with different cultures, and experience intense emotions all without leaving your couch!
My goal is not to convert students to any particular world view, but to expose them to as many different possibilities as I can and encourage them to examine their own beliefs without bias. We will be doing this with the help of open conversation, contemporary and classic literature, poetry, film, and even music!
